The days of North American monotone manhole covers are finally over ;-)
How you ask? And where?
Thanks to George K. Clarke of New London, CT we no longer have to stare at those boringly bland, street-dulled entrances to the underworld.
George has made its his mission to bring life and colour to the street mandalas in New London, Connecticut. Using coloured sand (in various
colours - hence the coloured part), George will make use of the night (or day) to fill in the grid patterns creating ground-based works of art
out of the cast iron works of art...
And unlike grafitti, the sand simply blows or washes away with the next rain storm, leaving multicoloured swirls of art-down-the-drain.

George has clearly left his mark on New London, as well as the manhole art community with his active artworks. Aside from public curiousity by passersby
now actually taking notice of the manhole covers, local media has also found the colourings rather amusing.
For a while it seems the identity of the manhole colourer was a mystery (according to the paper), with 'suspicion" quickly falling on George. The paper even
investigated with the City, wondering whether the new city attraction was commissioned by the Public Works department. And if not, speculating whether the
colouring would qualify as a crime...

 |
But not to worry - despite the newspaper revealing that it could, indeed, be considered littering - the coloured manhole cover sightings will likely
continue.
At least until George runs out of sand...
So until then - enjoy the sand & art.
