ManHole New(s)
  • Our hosting contract was terminated by Canaca.com because we had too many visitors hitting the site at the same time which apparently screws up the scripts and crashes their software.

    Bullshit.

Now we're back, but it'll take some time to re-upload all the pictures in the database.

    Sorry for the inconvenience.

What happened? As ManHole.ca became more popular, more visitors came to visit. Seems to make sense. We chose Canaca.com as a hosting service because they promised exorbitant amounts of hosting space, bandwidth and transfer volume. To be exact 160GB storage and 1,200GB bandwidth traffic. That's 1,200,000 MB of traffic, or 1,200,000,000 KB. The main page of this site is 17KB big with six 2KB pictures.

    So far so good.

However, as soon as a few thousand visitors hit the site at the same time (and we're not talking massive attacks here, but just visits), Canaca.com shut us down with their nice "Account suspended" line (along with their advertising - after all, you have to take advantage of every situation). They allege the scripts running on the site weren't working properly.

The same scripts that had been running fine for over 1 1/2 years. According to Canaca.com they degrade, and then become screwed up. And screwed up scripts crash the server. But they weren't able to tell me which script wasn't working properly, nor what to do about it other than re-install everything. Which I did a few months ago over a full weekend.

On July 11th the site went down again, same reason was given - an increased amount of traffic caused the scripts to go haywire (again) and slow their server down. No explanation, no friendly (or even unfriendly) warning.

Their tech support called me back after an hour (in accordance with their 15 min. call back policy) to tell me that I had been warned and was now shut down. The databases had been deleted, the site was inactive.

    Great service.

Anyway - a new hosting company has been found; far more expensive and with less space and bandwidth; but so far excellent service. We'll see how this goes...

Any pictures are still welcome, but it will be at least three weeks (today's July 13) before the site is back up. Why? Because I've been invited to participate in a movie shoot (completely manhole unrelated, but still cool) and will be out for two-three weeks...
